Tips for wedding dress shopping

Before I go in to the nitty gritty of the dress, remember you want to look draw dropping beautiful to your husband to be. We want to see those man tears. Not a bad idea to share with him some of your ideas, just to get a feel of his
likes and dislikes. The last thing you want is to wear a gown that he doesn’t like. Even though they may say it’s your choice and they don’t mind- they DO

1. Stay calm and enjoy shopping
You have to go through the motion and try on a dew dresses. I would recommend between 5 and 10. Don’t over do it, then you’ll just get confused.

2. Shapes and sizes
Start by just trying different silhouettes. Then you can see if you prefer ballgown, mermaid, A-line or straight.

3. 50 shades of white
Next you can look at all the different shades of white, off white, nude or cream. There is just a slight difference between the shades but choosing the perfect one will enhance your complexion. To name but just a few:

  • White looks stunning on a dark skin, the colour really pops
  • Winter white is a softer shade of white and works for most skin tones. It still looks very white in the day light and is not as glary as pure white.
  • Nude is excellent to use under either white or cream lace. It really shows the pattern of the lace if you’re looking for more define detail
  • Then a rich cream can work on a pale skin and give depth.

4. To lace or not to lace

  • Now you can start looking at the detail on the dress.
  • Again there are so many different pattern of lace available.
  • Knowing your budget may help you decide. The lace range from R500 to R7000+pm
  • Flower curly lace is very romantic and soft, a leaf line design is more edgy
  • This is entirely personal choice and the style of your wedding; vintage, country or Hollywood
  • These are just a few starter points.
  • It is the most important part of your wedding.
  • You want to look stunning but also be comfortable.
  • It is a long day and you are on your feet most of the time.
  • You mingle with your guests while looking amazing and vibrant the whole time.
  • Nothing is poking you or scratches your neck.

Actually it is a celebration of new life! Jesus Christ died and rose again. He triumphant over death and gives us an opportunity to have everlasting life. What a wonderful and fantastic message to bring into your wedding.

You and your partner leaving your separate lives, being single dies and you start a new beginning as life-long partners. Together you are stronger and able to triumph over obstacles that might come your way.

Using Easter as your wedding inspiration, your colour palette should be soft, pastel colours. Pink, yellow, lilac, blue and turquoise, don’t just look beautiful together but each has a meaning that will contribute to the spirit and essence of your wedding.

Pink brings happiness, love and romance. Yellow represents joy, hope and a new life. Lavender stands for passion, grace and femininity, while blue and turquoise enhance peacefulness, tranquillity and harmony. Peach is the colour for fruitfulness, creativity and work.

Easter is also a long weekend and is therefore ideal to have a destination wedding. A perfect opportunity for families that are spread over the country and world to come together and celebrate.

For the bride, a very important aspect to start off the planning, is obviously her dress. Easter broadens your choices to have an exceptional and remarkable wedding.

Sand, sea and sun creates excitement for an Easter beach wedding. The dress should be light, flowy and could be layered in colours of aqua and blues. It’s time for fun and playfulness. Choosing a detachable dress from New Romantics gives you the freedom to be adventurous.

Or transform your Easter wedding into an enchanting forest celebration.  A whimsical, soft, chiffon dress with an ombre skirt brings out the romance and magic and the perception of a fairy tale.

Another option is a relaxed Easter farm wedding, which brings family together in a loving atmosphere. A classical boat neck style dress with nude coloured lace and a chiffon skirt is ideal. Comfortable to mingle, dance and embrace loving family moments.

Enjoy and have fun. You are beautiful and stunning. Your fiancé will love you

Mirror, mirror on the wall

Oh which dress is the best of them all?

Choosing your wedding dress is one of the life’s most stressful decisions. You will be the center of attention on your big day. Whether you are an extrovert or not – the idea is very scary.

Most important is that you enjoy the journey, feel special and have fun.

Here are a few tips:

  • Every bride’s journey is different. We are all different and so our decision making and style. Your friend might have found her dress at the first shop and had the love at first sight experience. There is nothing wrong if it doesn’t happen for you. Or if you don’t get the butterfly feeling. Some of us are more emotional and some more analytical.
  • Start collecting ideas, create a mood board. Not just of your dress but your wedding theme, venue color scheme ext. It’s very helpful for the designer who you have just met to get a feel of your taste and style
  • The first few dresses you fit on is just to get the silhouette. Don’t worry too much on the detail that will come later. Don’t try and put all your life’s dream dresses all into one. Less is more. You don’t want to look like a fabric explosion.
  • Work out your budget. It helps the designer and yourself to work in the right direction, so that you don’t waste time and creating expectations on a design you can’t afford.
  • Start shopping a year in advance. Just get few ideas and costs and give yourself time to let it sink in. then you can start the actual making of your dress 6 months before.
  • Take your mom, sister or best friend with. Not too many people and too many options that will confuse you. Just someone that will be honest and knows you well. Actually a brother or male friend is the best. They will know what your fiancé likes and how he will react when you come down the aisle.
  • Be open minded. Try on different styles even the ones that you didn’t consider in the beginning. You might be surprised. Also you won’t get a panic attack a week before the wedding and start second guessing your dress. You did the homework, you made the right decision. Keep calm and look beautiful in your dress.
  • Don’t cheap out. It’s your wedding dress, your most important dress in your life. You deserve the best. Don’t shop online and buy a knock of designer dress in cheap synthetic fabric and bad workmanship.

Enjoy and have fun.
You are beautiful and stunning.
Your fiancé will love you

Tip: remember you want to look beautiful for your fiancé in your bridal gown. He is the most important person. Not your mother, sister or friend.

FAQ:  when should you start dress shopping?

Star a year in advance. Get a few basic ideas and decide on a budget. Start the actual making/ ordering of your dress 6 months before the big day.

Congratulations on all the newly engaged couples. Now the big planning starts!

There are a couple of wedding expo’s. The year starts off with the favourite expo at Oakfields wedding venue the 28th and 29th of Feb.

Planning your wedding can be very stressful and almost always causes disagreements. You might often wonder whether you have made the right choice to get married after all!

Here are a few tips:-

Put yourself and your partner first. It’s your wedding, not your parent’s or friend’s! Ask each other what type of wedding the two of you would prefer – formal, country, beach, medieval or your personalised choice.

Decide on a budget. You don’t want to start your marriage with a big wedding debt. Accept that it will be costly but you need it to be special to remember it for years to come!

Divide the responsibilities and tasks. Don’t be a control bridezila. When you have asked a person to do certain things, leave them and trust them. People feel good about themselves when they are trusted with responsibilities. It is good for their self-esteem. Set dates to report to you.

Be open to change. Every bride wants her wedding to be perfect to the last little rose petal on the table, but things don’t always work out exactly as planned. You might not find the correct shade of decor or material for bridesmaid dresses or your favourite flower is not in season during your wedding month. Relax and widen your spectrum of choices.

Choosing your bridesmaids:-

Remember the main purpose of a bridesmaid is to help you with planning the wedding and to assist you during the wedding day, not just to look pretty. So rather choose a friend or sister that will be willing to go the extra mile for you, even if she is overweight or pregnant.

Think of a few small surprises for your partner to enhance the excitement, like hiding a note in his socks or a small gift in the fridge or something that will make it special. Keep the romance alive! You can easily be swept away into the planning and forget who and why you are getting married.

Don’t stress your family and friends out over your wedding. They are not going on a honeymoon afterwards. It is so sad to hear people saying that they just want their wedding to be over! It is your special day and you want it to last forever.

I have seen some brides who have managed to stay calm, relaxed and going with the flow and then everything works out perfectly on the wedding day! Decide to be one of them and not panic, stress or be a micro manager. Things might go wrong then and you will just be a ball of knots! It is your day, have fun, laughter and happiness.
